Live Large & Prosper

Ok, I admit it. I am a nerd, my husband has got me hooked on Star Trek. I am not a total trekkie, but I do enjoy it. We actually spent the evening watching Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. You might be asking yourself why I would actually admit to this and what this has to do with my blog. Let me explain. Leonard Nimoy, who plays Spock, released a book of black and white nude photographs called The Full Body Project. The interesting thing about this book is that the photographs are of full-figured women (NSFW). The Full Body Project is a promotion of body acceptance at any size, and I commend Mr. Nimoy for thinking that all women are beautiful. May he live long and prosper!

On a side note... A small protion of the movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock was filmed at my alma mater (the fountain on the planet Vulcan).

The Previously Promised Verbose Post

So some time ago I am too ashamed to tell you when... OK OK way back on November 2nd, I posted a my life in pictures for October with a promise to explain. So the following post is the explanation of said random pictures.

The first picture (HERE) is from where I laid my poor little jetta to rest. It was a sad and unfortunate day, as it had been my car since I was in high school. You might be wondering why it looks like I crashed into a center divider and tipped over. Well, let me tell you, I did crash into a center divider and tip over. Fortunately, no one else was involved in the accident and though my jetta suffered immensely I was no worse for wear except for a nasty seat belt burn (that has long been healed with minimal scarring). There is still a lovely blue mark on the center divider to commemorate my dare-devilry. So, with one less car in mi familia Mr. FD and I have been relegated to carpooling. At first I thought we might murder one another, but it has been kinda nice actually. Just don't tell him I said so.

October is also a birthday month in the FD household (see HERE), as both Mr. FD and I celebrate the anniversary of being expelled from our mothers' uteruses (or is it uteri) in October. Beginning in probably January, Mr. FD begins reminding me that his birthday is coming up and I should start thinking about what I am going to get him. Beginning around the same time I start to suffer from selective hearing especially when my husband is pointing out yachts and flat screen televisions. I always make him his absolute favorite meal and his favorite cake to mark the occasion.

One of the presents I got for Mr. FD is related to picture 3, unfortunately it did not come in time for his birthday and ended up becoming a Christmas present. I have probably mentioned the love Mr. FD and I share for all things Star Trek... Well I shelled out the cash and got him the Star Trek TNG the complete series on DVD. BTW, this makes me like the best wife EVER. If you have never watched the show, here is a ridiculous montage (my favorite part is at 20 seconds):

The last picture is in reference to the annual party Mr. FD and I throw for his work. Much food was eaten, hookah was smoked, and too much alcohol was consumed. A good time was had by all, and the most shocking part was I cleaned up immediately after guests left. I felt like such a grown up.

The past several months have been consumed by school and not much else. Unfortunately I have been a total slacker in terms of both diet and exercise, but it is finally spring in my neck of the woods and I have already begun lacing up my running shoes.

You can look forward to your regularly scheduled programming this afternoon, i.e. something at least remotely nutrition related!

OMG

I am blog hopping while the hubs watches a Star Trek movie, and stumbled across a deliciously gross blog This is Why You're Fat (definitely going on the blogroll). There are pictures and descriptions of foods I feel guilty looking at (much less eating)!

For example: the deep fried smore on a stick, bacon explosion wellington, or the mega double stuff oreo.

As a woman with a major sweet tooth my personal favorite is the Deep Fried Peanut Butter-Covered Brownie Wrapped In Cookie Dough, but I feel fatter just salivating over it!

Enjoy!

school + work + husband +limited computer access = no time for blogging

Well... its been more than a month since I have posted. I have no excuse, but I truly was busy. Fortunately things have calmed down immensely and I will be back to my regular blogging schedule.

What could I possible have been so busy with for the past month and a half? A lot. I took 19 hours of classes, and because I am a master procrastinator it kicked my behind. Still working in the lab. Still married to a terrible man who demands I get off of the computer and spend time with him (just kidding honey, I <3 you). Unfortunately my laptop charger is still misbehaving, so my computer access has been rather limited.

Overall, life has been wonderful. I was named top collegiate scholar, was accepted by the internship program (required to become a registered dietitian), received my tax return, installed new flooring, survived the semester, and received my second bachelor's degree (summa cum laude). I was beginning to think that something was terribly wrong in the universe for all of these wonderful things to happen to me, then I fell and sprained my ankle... such is my life.

My ankle is healed, and I am back on the wagon. I have been eating well and exercising, and I have lost 11 pounds the past 3 weeks. Slowly but surely making progress.

In my absence I have accumulated numerous confessions. I will start with my most recent dietary offense. Thursday night the hubs and I stayed up well past our bed time to see the new Star Trek movie. If you have not gone out to see it, go NOW *seriously*! It is fabulous, for trekkie and new fans alike. I have always loved going to the movies, and one of my favorite things to do while watching movies is to consume a ridiculous amount of candy. Terrible, yes. Yummy, YES. My predominant candy of choice is Hot Tamales. I love them and all of their cinnamony goodness. Well, on Thursday I decided to cut calories and eat super light throughout the day. I succeeded, and didn't feel too ravenous. The reason I did this was so that I could eat a HUGE box of Hot Tamales without the guilt. So I confess... I will dilligently count calories for the sole purpose of eating candy later. If it is any consolation, I had a horrible stomach ache all of Friday and I will (probably) not make the same mistake when hubs and I go see Angels and Demons Thursday night.

I hope all is well with everyone... and I will make the comment rounds ASAP. :)

A testament to my nerdiness

I am a nerd. I have come to terms with the fact that I will never be cool or hip, and I am ok with it. In fact I embrace my nerdiness, and hope to spread this outlook to others. When I taught middle school I would sometimes make them give me a high five and say "I am a nerd, and I am proud" before they could leave the class room. Yes... I was that obnoxious overly energetic, enthusiastic teacher.

I have hinted at my nerdiness before with the occasional Star Trek reference or my excitement over chemical compounds, but I have a confession...

I listen to NPR. My husband is actually to blame, because he is the one who got me hooked. When I am in my car you can find me spazzing rocking out to pop music or listening to NPR. Hands down my favorite is Zorba Paster, a family doctor with an infectious laugh.

I decided to confess my love of NPR and Zorba because he featured a recipe this past Sunday that I simply must share, Louisiana Sweet Potato Salad. Not only is it relatively low in calories, but it is extremely nutrient dense and sounds delicious. Fortunately I have a couple of sweet potatoes just waiting to be used...
